Taking the notion of time and bending it round various psychedelically-induced states of consciousness, like a clown with a balloon animal, this talk will demonstrate that not only does time go forward, but often it is distorted or can become elastic, or even go backwards, and actually time is illusory, because it can stand still, or fracture, or not exist at all. Dr. David Luke lectures in psychology at several London universities and is a writer and researcher with a special interest in parapsychology and altered states of consciousness. He has studied techniques of consciousness alteration from South America to India, from the perspective of scientists, shamans and Shivaites. He lives life on the edge, of Hackney.
Jon Atkinson - Entheogencia: Legacies and Praxes. Jon has sat for thousands of people on salvia and other portal plants and substances, he was the main organiser of the psychedelic conference Exploring Consciousness with Bath Spa University, writes, edits and lectures on psychedelics in a wide range of contexts, lived for a short while with the Mazatec Indians, works for the psychedelic welfare service Kosmicare at festivals, and in the mainstream world as a mental health assistant in medium secure psychiatry. Jon has has known a variety of sides of madness, bliss and some normality. Those who engage most fruitfully with psychedelic plants throughout global culture tend to do so through the context of magical circles or social gatherings that ground the outpouring energies of novelty and connect the individuals to their wider communities. They are pseudopodia of healthy societies. We will review of the major players, the plant teachers, their human cultures and roles in the origins of religions and language games. They are both boundary dissolving destroyers of dogma and adaptogenic fountains of creation. Realities die and are reborn. We encounter entheogens through diverse varieties of ritual practices including medicine circles, solo explorations, parties, festivals, mutual seductions, walks in nature and multiple other technologies of liberation.
Mark Heley - Planetization: The evolutionary shift of 2012. The idea of planetization is that of an expanded frame of reference that places humanity and the biosphere into a new broader context of a symbiotic unity. To become planetized is to adopt new ways of thinking that reflect a holistic viewpoint between humankind and the planet. A planetized view is one able to conceptually grasp that this planet is just one of many, from one solar system, among billions of star systems, among billions of galaxies. The Mayan calendar and the Vedic Yuga cycle, with their galactic frames of reference, are both planetized calendars. The New Copernican Revolution of planetization shifts the center point of our universe from the sun and our local solar system to the new reference point of the galactic center. This dramatically different sense of scale encourages more holistic global-scale thinking and makes it easier. A rapid shift to a planetized perspective may in fact be the best way to save our planet and ourselves from the blinkers of rampant technological consumerism and its toxic overshoot. Planetization could be described as almost the polar opposite of globalization. If globalization was the de facto economic religion of the expansionist late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, planetization is the balancing force of the emerging holistic paradigm of 2012. Dramatic choices await humanity as we approach 2012. As in the Chinese proverb, “We are born in interesting times.” It will be up to us collectively to decide whether this is a curse or a blessing.
