Sunrise Off-Grid 2009

Kid's Area

KIDS AREA

We know it’s all about the kids and we want to bring out the festival pixie in all of them and you included, all the more possible when little pixies are having an amazing time in safe hands. So, we are hosting a space full of fun activities that encourage participation and creativity featuring small kids playground, traditional fairground rides, den-making, storytelling, recycled science, spectacular out door giant games, workshops for toddlers, kids and teens, performance and many a giggle.

The highlight of the Kids Area at Off Grid is the NEW Al-Cademy. This exciting new space is aimed at kids from 8-15 and is a new venture in Edu-Tainment. The Al-Cademy includes....

FOREST SCHOOL:- A group of experienced woodland folk will be taking the kids out into nature to experience the joys of outdoor exploration. Forest School lessons will include - Cooking on the fire, Clay Totem Pole Making, creative writing in nature, fire-making and various other woodland crafts and skills. Forest School will be on every morning throughout the event.

DEN-BUILDING:- Daily Workshops with Melina Hubbard. Kids can get into free-range eco-building, facilitated and guided by Melina of the Cartwheels Collective. Over the course of the weekend, expect a mad play-house to arise from collected junk and scraps.

STORYTELLING WITH DEOR:- Deor of the Cartwheels Collective will be regaling us all with colourful tales from across the world. Deor will present two forty minute shows each day for three days. Deor specialises in environmental storytelling investigating different ways in which humans treat the environment and each other, including the Inca Flood myth, the oldest flood story from Gilgamesh, the Native American myth of how medicine came from herbs, an Icelandic tale about the spread of plague, etc.. Other sources include Arab, Italian, African, Chinese stories etc.. Shows suitable for age four and over.

Other features of The Al-Cademy include:- Creative Writing * Kids' Kung Fu! * Designing the Future * Superfoods and Nutrition * Kids Capoeira * Teenage Sexuality * Survival Skills & more....

OTHER KIDS AREA FEATURES

Campaign for Real Events will be alternating sessions on their Children's Pedal Generators (where even little children can generate their own electricity to power lights, a gameboy or other applications) with practical workshops dismantling computer printers and making LED windmills http://www.c-realevents.demon.co.uk/

And just an aside, as most of the Sunrise Team have kids themselves (or stepkids at least!) the camp is designed with the family in mind. We intend to create a safe and fun environment for the young to be in, however, whilst encouraging free-range kids, we also caution parents to be aware of the locations of their kids and not to try and use the kids area as a creche - It isn't! Sunrise can be a great place for a child to grow and explore amongst a community who will help look out for them. We are sure they will thank you for it!

This year's Kids Area will include theatre, craft, circus skills workshops to fairground rides and play equipment, with the intention that the children have a little festival all of their own!

Drama, music, circus and craft workshops are an important way of developing a child’s manual dexterity, expressive and interpersonal skills. They are great fun too!
